Island Paradise
An island where white sandy beachs and lush rainforest meets crystal clear coral reefs. Better try find it while you can! Islands are forever changing. As sea level rises and coral reefs around an island grow, the island will actually sink due to the added weight from coral growth. This obviously doesn't happen overnight. Rates of islands sinking has been recorded at 1-2mm per year. Meanwhile rates of sea level rise are increasing rapidly and ocean levels are currently rising around 3-4mm per year. This is due to climate change accelerating the rate of glaciers melting. Some Islands in the Pacific have recorded a 0.2m rise of sea level in the last century. However the problem lies with how fast sea level rise is increasing exponentially. Within the last 30 years the ocean has risen 10cm which is not good news for low lying coral atolls.
